Redwood Elementary
Solutions! Redwood has two fields to recreate on. There is a 1.5 acre track on the north side, next to the Starr Center. On the south side is almost 3 acres including a t-ball field and plenty of grass for peewee football and soccer practice teams for small-sided games. Redwood fields are in extreme disrepair although they are still used year-around by the elementary school and recreational teams.
The gophers and moles have had their way. These will be the first fields worked on. To begin our task, we have selected the north field at the Redwood School campus. Our plans for this field include enlarging the running track and removing the curb so that the space inside the track area can be fully employed for school events and sports, such as lacross, soccer and football. Plans include replanting the interior with appropriate grass; adding a platform for two portable toilets and assessing the drainage system.

Dana Gray
Solutions! Dana Gray field has been the focus of school and residential recreation. With over 9 acres to play on, it has been the favorite location for pickup ball games, Frisbee golf, pitching practice, cheer practice, and dog training. It has been the go-to location for tournaments of every kind, including softball, baseball, football, and soccer. Because of its large area, it is possible to play multiple games of different sports at the same time.
As you can see below, this field is in the worst condition of all the recreational fields in Fort Bragg, and will be the most expensive to repair. The irrigation has not been working for some time; there are serious soil and drainage problems, and the moles and gophers have created hazards. |
FB Middle School
Solutions! The middle school is almost 7.5 acres in size, with ample room for sports of all kinds, and is probably the most heavily utilized recreational field in Fort Bragg. It's also a popular dog-walking area and near Otis P. Johnson forest park. Hundreds of adults and children play soccer, softball, and t-ball on this field year-around from dawn to dusk.
This field has serious gopher and mole damage. |
